The banking industry in the English-speaking Caribbean is a well-established industry, in which most of the commercial banks operate with a conservative business model in an improving regulatory environment. The region’s banking industry comprises a mix of both publicly and privately-owned banks as well as indigenous and/or foreign-owned institutions.
These banks service a population of approximately 5.1 million persons. The industry is critically important to the region with the ratio of Total Banking Sector Assets/GDP for the Fiscal Year averaging around 120%, with Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) reporting ratios well above the average.
